Stomatitis in children and adults - causes, symptoms and treatment

My daughter is 1 year old. On Wednesday, a small rash appeared on the priest, on Thursday - on the legs, on Friday - on the hands. On the palms and feet, the rash is watery like calluses. Bad smell from the mouth, palate white with ulcers. Sweetheart eats and sleeps badly. The rash does not scratch. Valeria

Viral pemphigus of the mouth and extremities (mouth-hand-foot syndrome)cause Coxsackie virus (serotypes A4-A7, A9, A10, A16, B1-B3, B5) and enteroviruses (types 71 and 19). First, there is fever, fatigue and sore throat. Then painful sores in the mouth and watery blisters or red pimples appear on the palms, feet, between the fingers and toes, and on the buttocks. The temperature lasts 2-3 days. Mouth ulcers go away in 7 days. The rash on the arms and legs lasts 10 days and may flake off. Within 4 weeks, the virus is present in the stool. At this time, the person who has recovered is contagious. After the transferred enterovirus infection, lifelong immunity to the serological type of the virus is formed. It does not protect against other varieties of these viruses. therefore enterovirus infection you can get sick several times.

Treatment of viral pemphigus of the oral cavity and extremities

There are no antiviral drugs for the Coxsackie virus. Treatment consists only in anesthesia - nurofen every 6 hours, and for stomatitis, a local mixture: 2% lidocaine solution + diphenhydramine + maalox. Drink plenty of fluids. The food is mashed. Avoid sour, salty and spicy foods. The disease goes away by itself in 6-10 days.

The son and daughter got sick with this muck in September. First 3 days high temperature. Then blisters on the palms, feet, under the nails and a little on the body. In the mouth, around the lips and nose, blisters like herpes. The rash lasted a day, the tin was like itching. The children cried at night. As soon as everything poured out, it stopped scratching. The next 10 days, the rash was dried with fucorcin. 2 weeks after complete recovery smudges appeared on the palms and feet and the skin began to peel off, just like in a horror movie. And a month later, the nails began to peel off, under which there were bubbles. And now it is November, and we were sick in September, the marigolds are still falling off. There are about 20 children in the neighbors, and everyone has been ill with this filth. Sasha

This is the Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease. Caused by Coxsackie viruses and other enteroviruses. Children under 10 years of age are more often ill, but cases of the disease are also found in adults.

The whole family was ill in November. Her husband got the worst. At first, the temperature was 39 ° C, and on the second day a rash appeared. Blisters are all over the face, hair, arms, legs, singly on the back and bottom ... How he screamed in pain, you will not wish the enemy. My hands are swollen. I could not step on my feet, hobbled to the toilet on my toes. We drank nurofen for pain. Analgin with diphenhydramine injected him at night so that he could sleep. The throat was gargled. The face was smeared with cicabio lotion, like children with chickenpox, it dries. The nails came off until April. 5 doctors looked at us and put forward 5 versions, from chickenpox to the Coxsackie virus. This was the Coxsackie virus - laboratory confirmed. Elena

In the history of the patient's life, there is much more useful than in all the encyclopedias of the world. People need your experience - "the son of difficult mistakes." I ask everyone, send recipes, do not regret advice, they are a ray of light for the patient!

Take care of yourself, Your Diagnostician!

Stomatitis is the general name for diseases of the oral mucosa. This is not a specific diagnosis, since stomatitis can accompany a variety of diseases. Rather, it is the body's response to reduced immunity. Stomatitis has different causes, which is why they are treated in different ways. An integrated approach to the treatment of diseases of the mucous membrane will avoid recurrence of stomatitis in children and adults.

How does stomatitis manifest?

Stomatitis can manifest itself in the following forms:

 1. catarrhal - swelling, redness and soreness of the oral mucosa, the appearance of a white or yellow plaque, accompanied by a bad smell;
 2. ulcerative - the appearance of ulcers throughout the thickness of the mucous membrane, an increase in lymph nodes, an increase in body temperature, headache;
 3. aphthous - aphthae appear on the mucous membrane - gray ulcers with a red rim up to 5 mm in diameter, they are very painful, accompanied by elevated temperature;
 4. herpetic - is a manifestation of herpes, characteristic bubbles appear on the mucous membrane, there can be a lot of them, they cause discomfort, itching, body temperature also rises, salivation increases;
 5. candidal - most common in children, looks like white bloomaccompanied by bleeding, severe salivation, burning sensation and loss of taste.

Stomatitis is a lesion of the entire mucosa. If the disease manifests itself in individual parts of the mouth, then such forms have their own names:

 1. glossitis - stomatitis of the tongue
 2. cheilitis - lip damage;
 3. palatinitis - stomatitis of the palate.

Stomatitis is almost always accompanied by fever, swollen lymph nodes, headache, weakness, fatigue, increased salivation and hyperemia. These symptoms can be mild, and in children they are almost always very bright. More often children suffer from stomatitis, which is explained by the instability of the immune system. But recently, stomatitis is being diagnosed more often in the adult population. Today we can say that up to 20 percent of the total population of the earth have suffered stomatitis in one form or another.

Stomatitis is most often not contagious (except herpes and candidiasis). Its danger is that it usually recurs. In children, stomatitis most often manifests itself for the first time before the age of 3 years. Then it can be repeated throughout life.

Causes of stomatitis

Stomatitis can be caused by a variety of reasons:

 • fungus - the cause of candidal stomatitis;
 • bacterial infections;
 • a virus - for example, the herpes virus, the development of which leads to the appearance of herpetic blisters on the mucous membrane;
 • allergies to medicines and food can lead to stomatitis;
 • diseases of the gastrointestinal tract;
 • dental problems (caries, tartar, periodontitis, etc.);
 • smoking;
 • decreased immunity - general and local.

aStomatitis is always a sign of decreased immunitya, since healthy body easily copes with opportunistic bacteria and fungi. If a person does not observe hygiene, often catches a cold, does not engage in treatment chronic diseases, leads an unhealthy lifestyle, then any of the above reasons can cause serious problems with the oral mucosa.

Types of stomatitis

Herpetic stomatitis

The most common stomatitis is caused by the herpes virus. Herpetic stomatitis may be part of common disease, which has manifestations both on the face and in the mouth, and may be an independent disease. The duration of the disease is up to 14 days. During this time, the bubbles go through the same stages as herpes on the face. First, the mucous membrane turns red, then small bubbles filled with liquid are poured on it. At first, the liquid is clear, and then it becomes cloudy. The appearance of bubbles is accompanied by itching and an increase in body temperature. Three days after the appearance of the bubbles, they burst, ulcers form in their place, which can be covered with a white or yellow coating.

Herpetic stomatitis has viral nature... Virus herpes simplex lives in the human body all his life. You cannot get rid of it. Under certain conditions, the virus begins to multiply and appear on the face and body of a person in the form of bubbles. The following circumstances provoke the development of herpes:

 • exacerbation of chronic diseases;
 • hypothermia and colds;
 • taking medications that reduce immunity (such as corticosteroids)
 • seasonal lack of vitamins.

For the development of herpetic stomatitis, the reason may be a decrease in local immunity in the mouth, that is untreated teeth, tartar, gum problems, mucosal injury, tonsil disease.

Herpes of the tongue is especially unpleasant, as the blisters are itchy, the ulcers formed in their place hurt and can bleed. It is almost impossible to fix the tongue in a motionless state, so the healing of the affected areas can take a very long time.

Aphthous stomatitis

The second most common type of stomatitis. Usually localized near the lips and teeth or on the tongue. Aphthae appear on the mucous membrane, there may be several or only one of them. Aphthae are inflamed areoles diameter up to 5 mmcovered inside with a bloom. Aphthae are very painful. They appear due to diseases of the digestive system, disorders of local immunity, trauma to the oral cavity. Also, aphthous stomatitis is one of the manifestations of food or drug allergies.

Most often, aphthous stomatitis is recurrent and chronic. Exacerbations of the disease can be very long, especially if left untreated. With a careless attitude to aphthous stomatitis, he can go to the necrotic stage, at which surgical treatment will become necessary.

Ulcerative stomatitis

This form is also called ulcerative necrotizing stomatitis Vincent... Symptoms are bleeding of the gums and dryness of the mucous membrane of the mouth, then ulcers appear, which from the area of the teeth spread to other parts of the mouth - the tongue, cheeks, palate. Is developing ulcerative stomatitis due to unsatisfactory hygiene, smokers especially suffer from it.

Candidal stomatitis

Most common in children. Up to 80% of all cases of pediatric stomatitis are fungal in nature. The tongue with stomatitis caused by fungi can be completely covered with a white coating, it is also localized on the cheeks and palate.

Stomatitis treatment

Before you treat stomatitis, you need to find out its nature. For the treatment of stomatitis caused by bacteria, antibiotics are used, viruses - antiviral, fungus - antifungal drugs. In all cases, therapy is accompanied by immunomodulators. For the selection of treatment, it is better to consult a doctor. If you have coped with stomatitis on your own, but bubbles, sores or white plaque appeared again after a while, then this is a relapse of stomatitis, which means that it is necessary to treat diseases of the tongue and the entire mucous membrane of the mouth with a doctor.

Treatment of herpetic stomatitis

The overwhelming majority have herpes virus, it is impossible to get rid of it. But it is quite possible to reduce its negative impact on the body.

For the treatment of herpetic stomatitis use:

 • acyclovir-based drugs - they are taken at 200 mg for five days, it is advisable to start taking the drugs immediately when symptoms appear - it is believed that they are effective only when the bubbles have not yet burst, and with ulceration they are already useless. You can also take medications containing famciclovir and valacyclovir. There are a lot of them under different names. They are designed to restrain the development of the virus in the body and prevent the formation of new bubbles.
 • viferon gel - it has an antiviral and immunostimulating effect, it is applied directly to the mucous membrane. If salivation is increased, it is better to first blot the mucous membrane and only then apply the gel. Lubricate the affected areas several times a day, you can use the gel for up to 8 days. There are no age restrictions for the use of this tool.
 • immunostimulants - Imudon, Amiksin, Cycloferon and others. They are accepted according to the scheme indicated in the annotation. They help to cope with the disease faster and avoid relapses.
 • Miramistin - rinsing has an antiseptic effect;
 • vitamins - body support is very important for the treatment of stomatitis.

Advice

If herpetic stomatitis is accompanied by a very high temperature (above 38 degrees), you can and should take antipyretic drugs.

It is imperative to treat herpetic stomatitis. It is not enough to rinse your mouth with an antiseptic. The approach must be comprehensive. If you do not fight the virus from the inside, it will become stronger and the next time, with the slightest decrease in immunity, it will manifest itself with much greater strength. With the manifestation of herpes not only on the oral mucosa, but also on the face or body, it is necessary to combine the treatment of stomatitis and herpes on other parts of the body. On the mucous membrane, antiviral ointments are ineffective, but on the skin they help fight the virus. This means that to get rid of the bubbles in the mouth, you need to take pills, and for general antiviral therapy, add Zovirax, Acyclovir, Panavir and others ointments.

Treatment of aphthous stomatitis

First, they find out the reason for the appearance of aft. If this is a consequence of an exacerbation of a chronic disease of the digestive system, then it is necessary to remove this exacerbation - without this, treatment of stomatitis is useless. If the aphthae appear as an allergic reaction, then they take antiallergic drugs. If dental problems have led to stomatitis, it is necessary to cure caries, remove tartar, etc.

To relieve painful sensations and reduce aft, use:

 • antiallergenic agents - Tsetrin, Suprastin, etc. (when establishing the allergic nature of aphthous stomatitis);
 • antiseptic rinses, for example, Miramistin;
 • treatment with aft Holisal - this gel reduces inflammation and soreness, apply the gel up to 4 times a day;
 • for the healing of the mucous membrane, Solcoseryl gel is applied - it stimulates epithelization;
 • a course of immunostimulating drugs - for example, Imudon.

Aphthous stomatitis in children is dangerous because secondary infection can occur. It is important to maintain good hygiene and avoid infection.

Ulcerative stomatitis treatment

Attention: ulcerative necrotizing stomatitis should be treated only by a doctor. The consequences of self-treatment can be very serious.

The doctor prescribes a course of antibiotics. It can be Amoxiclav, Metronidazole and other drugs. Usually, pills and injections are combined. The course lasts at least 10 days. In addition, antiseptic rinses with Chlorhexidine are carried out several times a day and the affected areas are lubricated with Cholisal or Metrogyl-dent gel.

After the main treatment with a doctor, it is necessary to drink a course of immunostimulating drugs and vitamins in order to exclude a relapse.

Treatment of candidal stomatitis

To cure the fungal infection, the doctor prescribes antimycotic drugs - Fluconazole, Diflucan and others. The affected areas can be lubricated with Clotrimazole, Pimafucin, nystatin ointment. Rinsing with soda solution (2 teaspoons per glass of water) or 2% boric acid solution is recommended. At the time of treatment, carbohydrate food is excluded if possible.

For any form of stomatitis, the following remedies help relieve painful sensations:

 • Hexoral - these are lozenges (lozenges), which, due to the content of benzocaine, relieve pain, and due to chlorhexidine, they have an antiseptic effect;
 • Holisal - gel for solving dental problems, relieves inflammation and pain;
 • Kamistad - a gel based on lidocaine and chamomile, relieves pain and has an antiseptic effect;
 • sprays - Hexoral, Cameton, Ingalipt, Lugol, Vinilin.

For the speedy recovery of the oral mucosa, use:

 • Vinylin;
 • spray Propolis.

Any external means are best used in the form of a gel or spray, ointment forms are absorbed on the mucous membrane much worse. Drug therapy should be combined with the use of folk remedies.

Treatment of stomatitis with folk remedies

Facilities traditional medicine especially effective for the treatment of catarrhal stomatitis, and in the treatment of other forms of the disease, they can have an auxiliary effect.

It is worth noting that many of the old recipes are considered useless today. For example, mild rinsing was previously used. "Blue"... Today, with more serious and safer antiseptic solutions, this treatment option is ineffective.

To treat stomatitis or relieve discomfort, use:

 • rinsing with decoction or infusion of chamomile or sage - a tablespoon of herbs is poured with half a glass of boiling water and insisted, you can also use ready-made filter bags. Rinse your mouth with infusion several times a day.
 • lubricating the affected areas with rosehip, peach or calendula oil - perfectly stimulates healing, relieves pain;
 • fresh cut raw potatoes can be applied to painful areas or make an applique from grated potatoes - potato juice has an analgesic effect, it can also rinse your mouth;
 • kalanchoe or aloe juice helps dry the wounds and promotes their healing - you can rinse your mouth or apply a fresh cut to the affected areas;
 • for the treatment of stomatitis in adults, you can use potassium permanganate solution (very weak, slightly pink), hydrogen peroxide solution or furacilin solution;
 • to improve immunity, it is recommended to use decoctions and infusions of rosehip inside courses twice a year;
 • also to increase immunity they drink a course of decoctions, tea, tincture or echinacea syrup.

Prevention of stomatitis

In case of tongue disease, treatment must necessarily be accompanied by a solution to dental problems. Any advanced caries, periodontitis, plaque and calculus are excellent breeding grounds for recurrent stomatitis. Broken teeth can scratch the mucous membrane, improperly fitted dentures - rub and break the integrity of the gums. To avoid injury to the mucous membrane, you must definitely visit the dentist.

The key to oral health is hygiene. Everyone, young and old, needs to brush their teeth. However, excess hygienelike insufficient, can lead to the development of stomatitis. The destruction of all bacteria - including beneficial ones - leads to the fact that any new microorganisms that enter the mucous membrane can become pathogenic. And modern toothpastes containing sodium lauryl sulfate can cause dehydration, which leads to dryness and damage to the mucous membrane.

Stomatitis is a smoker's companion. Almost everyone has problems with the mucous membranes, which sooner or later lead to necrotizing stomatitis. If you cannot get rid of the addiction, to exclude stomatitis, you should regularly visit a dentist-hygienist, who will notice the initial symptoms of stomatitis and prescribe treatment.

With existing diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, it is worth avoiding spicy and fatty foods so as not to provoke a worsening of the condition. With recurrent stomatitis in diabetics and with candidiasis stomatitis, you should avoid foods high in simple carbohydrates.

Many people associate frequent stomatitis with helminthic invasion. If you suspect an infection with worms, it is fashionable to use Decaris or Pirantel. It is better to use these funds under the supervision of a doctor, especially when it comes to children.

During the seasonal "Vitamin deficiency" it is useful to drink a course of complex vitamins. For the prevention of stomatitis, the intake of B vitamins is especially effective, as well as vitamin C.

Any stomatitis can be considered chronic. Herpes will show up over and over again, especially if not used to treat it antiviral drugs, but hope that the bubbles disappear by themselves. Aphthous is most often a consequence of health problems, it indicates the presence chronic gastrointestinal diseases or decreased immunity. If a person has candidal stomatitis, then, most likely, his microflora is sensitive to fungi, and in the future the infection may recur.

To prevent this from happening, it is important to be attentive to your own health and to prevent a decrease in local or general immunity.

Scaly lichen is quite an unpleasant disease, especially if there is psoriasis on the face. Of course, seborrheic psoriasis on the face is a rather rare and atypical phenomenon, but this is by no means easier for patients, since the disease is chronic and will periodically occur again and again. The maximum that patients can count on is remission in several years, since the disease is incurable for modern medicine. Nevertheless, with psoriasis on the face, treatment will be able to significantly reduce the manifestations of the disease and significantly increase the period of remission.

Symptoms of psoriasis on the face

As already mentioned, seborrheic squamous lichen is an atypical form of the disease that usually occurs against the background of a genetic predisposition and can manifest itself at any time if there is a failure in lipid metabolism, the endocrine system or immunity. In psoriasis on the face, the symptoms are almost the same as the manifestations of scaly lichen on the trunk, and look like inflamed, reddish, rounded plaques that are raised above the skin. In addition to the aesthetic side associated with plaques as such, patients are often worried about itching and severe peeling in the affected areas of the skin.

Of all the areas on the head, psoriasis is the most common on the forehead. Less commonly, scaly lichen settles around the eyes and on the eyelids, in the area of the nasolabial folds and eyebrows. Often, the edges of the lips are involved in the pathological process (lip psoriasis). Psoriasis in the mouth occurs in 3% of cases of scalp psoriasis. Psoriasis of the tongue, mucous membrane of the lips and cheeks looks like slightly elevated, coated single papules. If you scrape off the plaque, you will see underneath that the affected area is bright red.

How to treat psoriasis on the face?

How to treat psoriasis on the patient's face, the doctor should say. The main thing is not to repeat the mistakes of people trying to disguise plaques with cosmetics, thinking that over time they will go away on their own. This is a very serious mistake! For example, few people know that scaly lichen on the head passes much faster than on the body. For this, however, you must meet a couple of conditions:

 • fulfillment of the doctor's recommendations;
 • constant open access of the sun and air to the affected areas of the skin.

And abundantly applied cosmetics in order to hide plaques on the forehead, nose or cheeks blocks this access, which means they increase the treatment period. In addition, it should be understood that the best result in the fight against any ailment can be achieved only with individually selected complex therapy, which will include:

 • photochemotherapy;
 • diet;
 • physiotherapy;
 • local remedies and others

Ointments for psoriasis on the face and other local agents are the mainstay of treatment at the initial stage of the disease. In a mild form, it can be a salicylic ointment, and in a severe form, it can be glucocorticoid. As for the face cream for psoriasis, it must be natural and intended for dry or very dry skin (for dry skin / for extra dry skin). In this case, the effect of such creams will be the higher, the fewer flavors and dyes they contain, and the thicker their texture. It is desirable that the basis is glycerin, solid oil or petroleum jelly. Equally important is proper skin care in areas affected by lichen scaly. So after washing, it is strictly forbidden to wipe off with a towel so as not to damage the cover. You can gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel, but no more.

In addition to topical preparations, the doctor may prescribe the patient a mild sedative in small doses, since one of the causes of exacerbation of psoriasis is stress. Vitamins for the skin (Aevit, Vitamin E), various preparations (Likopid, Polyphepan, Metipred), including those containing monoclinal antibodies, are required, which helps to stop the body from sending the wrong signal to the skin. The patient is referred for phototherapy. Thanks to ultraviolet radiation, the production of vitamin D will increase and the body's regeneration will be activated. In addition, in some private clinics specializing in skin problems, you can find a specially designed laser drug that can be used to treat lichen scaly.

Syphilis in the mouth is a common disease of the modern generation, which ignores the rules of healthy sexual contacts, regular medical examinations. In some cases, it is enough just to use an object of an infected person - a toothbrush, fork, toothpick, etc. Unfortunately, the disease is treated only in the early stages, which are not always diagnosed in a timely manner.

In the article we will consider the causes of infection with treponema, the main symptoms at each stage of the disease, and methods of effective therapy.

Many patients do not have a single example of syphilis infection in their lives. And, nevertheless, this does not make the disease more rare or less dangerous, since absolutely everyone can become infected with it at any age and place.

In the mouth, the disease can manifest itself for several reasons.

Disease stages and characteristic symptoms

Many patients are interested in what syphilis looks like in the mouth (photo below). Just like a regular one, it goes through 3 stages and has characteristic visual manifestations. The first phase is characterized by the appearance of a specific hard chancre (painless ulcers), in the second phase they disappear and are replaced by roseola (rash on the mucous membrane), at the end of the third phase a gum (node) appears, which changes the structure of soft tissues and even bones.

Let's consider each of the stages in more detail.

First phase

In the photo, syphilitic chancre

The first phase - the chancre develops. In the area where the pathogen has entered the oral cavity, a rounded, reddish and rather hard sore appears, which does not cause discomfort to the patient. Chancre can appear in any area of penetration of the triponeme - the inner part of the cheeks or lips, tongue, palate, tonsils and even the gums. The diameter of the ulcer does not exceed 20 mm, and the edges are slightly above the center. In some cases, not one, but several nearby chancre appears.

If we are talking about syphilis of the tongue, then the chancre may resemble a deep groove hidden in the fold of the mucous membrane.

The patient's subjective feelings at this stage: compaction in oral cavity of unknown origin, enlargement of nearby lymph nodes.

Second phase

The second phase is the attachment of papules, stomatitis and other formations. At the second stage, the chancre disappears, and various rashes on the body and mucous surface come to replace. After 7-9 days, reddish roseola forms in the oral cavity, which combine into the affected areas and increase. As a rule, this process flows into acute diffuse stomatitis.

Roseols do not cause discomfort to the patient, so it is also difficult to notice them in a timely manner.

The spots are located on the palate and tongue, the inner rim of the lips. They contain a high concentration of the pathogen inside. If during this period you do not start taking antibiotics, then the process of relapse begins. The spots disappear and appear again, but already in the form of papules and plaques.

Papules, unlike roseola, are not symmetrically located in the mouth, forming the so-called "patterns". If you try to remove their top layer, then peeling begins at the edges. If located on the tongue, receptors and papillae in the area atrophy.

In the photo, the manifestation of secondary syphilis on the lips

In some cases, purulent abscesses (pustules) may appear in the second stage. This process is accompanied by a sharp swelling of the lymph nodes of the whole body and hyperthermia.

Stage two symptoms are highly contagious, since the formations contain a high density of the tryponeme. During this period, the patient should be immediately placed in a hospital and isolated from others.

If effective therapy is not started in the second phase, pathogens will invade the larynx and pharynx, which will cause throat syphilis.

Third phase

The third phase - the appearance of gum, glossitis... The disease in this phase is quite neglected, therefore, new formations - nodules (gummas), abscesses and bumps - join the papules. This process can take about 4-5 months.

At the beginning of the phase, the nodes are seals on the tongue or palate, after the disappearance of which, bulk ulcers remain. When the wound heals, an atrophic scar remains in its place, which severely deforms soft tissues and even the jaw bones. In rare cases, a canal appears between the nose and mouth or the mouth and sinuses.

During this period, the patient cannot speak articulately. Diffuse glossitis joins the syphilis of the oral cavity, which provokes the development of connective tissue. The tissue of the tongue thickens, which makes it practically immobile, interfering with food intake and communication.

Pathologies that develop in the third phase are not amenable to treatment or natural recovery. In most cases, the patient is prescribed medical plastic or prosthetics.

Diagnosis of the disease

Initial examination and identification of formations may indicate the possibility of infection of the patient with syphilis. Inflamed areas, roseola, spots, chancres have clearly defined boundaries. When diagnosing such formations, the doctor should refer the patient to a dermatovenerologist, who, in turn, will send the discharge from the cavities for examination. The study is carried out under a microscope, which reveals the content of tryponema in the pathological fluid.

Unfortunately, a positive confirmation can only be obtained 2-3 weeks after the appearance of the primary foci of inflammation. Also, discharge from chancre may not contain the pathogen, so the venereologist will try to find them in the lymph nodes.

It is possible to obtain a positive confirmation of syphilis only after 2-3 weeks from the moment the primary foci of inflammation appear.

Serologic tests and procedures can detect syphilis in the mouth at any stage. The Wasserman reaction reveals an increase in the number of antibodies. However, the method does not always show reliable information, as pregnant women and people with autoimmune diseases may have a false positive reaction.

An effective method for detecting the disease can be immunodiagnostics, analysis of punctate from the fluid of the spinal cord, blood test for syphilis. The latter is prescribed to people at risk (health workers, vulnerable groups of the population, pregnant women, workers in children's institutions and catering, donors).

Also, the analysis is required for people who are sexually active, who enter into oral and homosexual acts.

Treatment of the disease and possible complications

Therapy in this case is aimed at suppressing the vital activity of the triponeme. Effective symptomatic treatment is also required and the sooner, the safer for the patient (lower risk of complications and relapses).

As a rule, the doctor prescribes bactericidal medicines of various groups and forms, as well as immunostimulants. Treatment is carried out in several courses, between which long pauses should be maintained.

Symptomatic treatment involves the use of antipyretic drugs, the use of local wound-healing and tissue regenerating agents, applications, baths, rinses, etc.

At the end of the course of treatment, the doctor conducts a serological blood test for several months.

If therapy is prescribed out of time, then the disease will cover not only the soft tissues of the oral cavity, but also the internal organs and systems, which will entail a general deterioration in the patient's condition.

With each month, the symptoms of syphilis in the tongue (photo below) and other areas of the oral cavity will fade, which patients mistakenly attribute to improvement.

Syphilis on the tongue

However, after a while, serious complications should be expected:

 • necrosis of soft tissues in the area of infection;
 • damage not only to the mucous membrane, but also to the internal organs, bones;
 • disruption of the circulatory and vascular systems, the occurrence of local bleeding;
 • damage to the soft tissues of the face and neck, asymmetry of facial contours;
 • slow destruction of brain cells.

Remember that a complete cure in stages 2 and 3 is almost impossible. Visit your dentist regularly, get tested, have a weekly oral self-examination, and avoid promiscuous sexual intercourse. It is also important to know that the body does not develop immunity to syphilis, which means that re-infection is possible.
