Eye disease barley. How is barley treated and called scientifically

Most people know very well what barley is - this trouble happens to both children and adults, mainly in the cold season. Outwardly, barley under the eye looks unaesthetic, brings tangible discomfort and forces its owners to be at home a lot and go out less often. What is this disease? How does it develop and is it possible to prevent the development of barley on the eye? Let's try to answer these questions.

Development of pathology

Barley is the name of the disease, invented by the people, because in its own way appearance the pathology resembles a grain of barley located near the eye. In medical terms, the disease bears the impressive name "gordolum" - this is what ophthalmologists call it. The essence of the pathology is the development of inflammation in the follicles or sebaceous glands of the upper or lower eyelid.

Formation mechanism

Eye abscesses are the most common pathology with which patients turn to an ophthalmologist. Medical control of the treatment of the disease is very important, because with untimely treatment and improper therapy, it is possible to provoke the development of severe complications, up to loss of vision.

80 percent of all people are familiar with the disease, so doctors have accumulated enough experience in the treatment of eye barley. We also managed to find out the reasons leading to the development of pathology:

 • bacterial infection (most often it is Staphylococcus aureus);
 • demodex - a mite that lives on the eyelashes;
 • fungal infection of the skin.

All these reasons lead to development inflammatory process either in the sebaceous gland or in the hair follicle. As a result of suppuration, a clearly defined purulent cavity is created, in which a secret accumulates. Externally, when an abscess matures, a yellow purulent secret shines through through thinned skin.

Some pathogenic microorganisms are most often transmitted to the surface of the eyelids with dirty hands, therefore, barley can appear on the eye even after inoffensive rubbing of the eyes after sleep or an infected applicator for applying eye shadow. The infection can also be transmitted during the eyelid tattooing procedure.

In addition to the reasons that directly provoke the appearance of barley in the eye, it is possible to identify factors conducive to the development of the disease. The disease often occurs in those people who have:

Promote the development of barley:

 • oily skin, especially around the eyes;
 • lack of vitamins;
 • weak immunity;
 • the presence of serious chronic diseases.

Very often, hordeolum is a complication of blepharitis, conjunctivitis, if the disease has not completely passed. It is also possible to "purchase" barley after improper use of contact lenses.

Varieties

There are several types of gordeolum. Abscesses are differentiated as follows:

There is also a classification by the number of abscesses - they can be either single or multiple. Most often, one abscess occurs, but in debilitated patients, hordeolum appears in several places.

Signs and complications of the disease

Barley usually develops fairly quickly. At first, patients feel:

 • itching in the eyelid;
 • soreness when pressed;
 • inflammation;
 • difficulty moving for centuries;
 • tearing.

The severity of the symptoms directly depends on the size of the abscess - with barely noticeable abscesses, the disease is easily tolerated, but large abscesses can lead to the fact that the eyelid is very swollen and the eye cannot be opened.

With multiple lesions in the eye, the following symptoms occur:

 • severe pain begins;
 • body temperature rises;
 • swollen lymph nodes;
 • arises headache by the type of migraine.

If the barley breaks out on its own and pus flows out, then all the symptoms disappear rapidly - the headache passes, the temperature drops. The eyelid heals, which will take about one week. With internal barley, it may not break through, or break through, which depends on the intensity and volume of the purulent process.

In no case should the barley under the eye be squeezed out, otherwise it can lead to serious complications.

When pressing on the purulent cavity, the infection can penetrate into the blood vessels of the face, and through them spread into the veins that supply blood to the eye sockets. Moreover, the further development of pathology is unpredictable. If the process does not stop in time, a person may even die from blood poisoning. There may be:

 • abscess of the century;
 • phlegmon;
 • thrombophlebitis;
 • sepsis;
 • purulent phlegmon.

With a negligent attitude towards your health and not correct treatment barley with folk remedies, the pathological process can be tightened so that an internal barley or chalazion develops. These complications require surgery.

Often, patients or others know what barley looks like on the eye, and do not go to an ophthalmologist. This is fundamentally not true, because even knowing the symptoms of barley on the eye, what they are, the signs can be determined by mistake. Therefore carry out differential diagnosis pathology should only be an ophthalmologist. Barley on the eyelid must be distinguished from:

 • dacryoadenitis;
 • tumors of the eyelids;
 • cysts;
 • chalazions.

Usually, during the diagnosis, special examinations are not required - already with a visual examination, doctors determine the disease. If hordeolum does not heal for a long time, or if nonspecific symptoms are present, then the following may be prescribed:

 • blood test;
 • analysis of urine;
 • scraping for demodex;
 • smear from the surface of the conjunctiva.

Treatment and prevention of illness

It is necessary to treat the disease already when the first signs of barley appear. How long the treatment lasts, and after how many days the symptoms go away, depends on the degree of intensity of the process. All patients are worried about how many days the barley passes, but this question cannot be answered clearly. On average, it takes about a week for treatment, after which it will be possible to go out and walk.

Can barley be treated with folk remedies? When treating barley, it is allowed to practice traditional medicine, however, warming with an egg and various tea compresses will help only in mild cases. With barley, it is necessary to consult an ophthalmologist, who not only correctly diagnoses the pathology, but also prescribes effective treatment.

Treatment is usually done like this:

Others may be called a doctor effective means... In some cases, at an early stage, the development of the disease can be stopped, but the longer you do not respond to the pathology, the more difficult the pathological process will be. If barley nevertheless appears, does not break through by itself and passes for a long time, the doctor prescribes auxiliary medical procedures - quartzing, UHF.

As soon as the barley breaks through and a certain amount of pus comes out, you should not consider the treatment finished - in this case, it is recommended to continue dripping and applying ointments to prevent possible complications.

You should not use contact lenses during treatment, since they could be the source of infection, and after the end of treatment, the lenses must be changed so as not to get infected again.

If conservative treatment of barley does not bring success, or complications of the disease appear, they resort to opening the abscess. This is done in a hospital setting in the ophthalmology department. After the patient is stitched, he is allowed to go home, but after this procedure, a high-quality wound treatment is necessary. Therefore, the patient will have to go to the doctor for some time to treat the wound surface. During the recovery phase, the patient is advised to take systemic and local antibiotics.

Forecasts and preventive measures

In medicine, there are enough techniques and tools to quickly and reliably cope with barley. It is important to remember that the more time passes from the development of pathology to the moment of going to the doctor, the more difficult it is to treat the disease. Therefore, how much barley passes through the eyes depends on the patient's vigilance. The quality of treatment and care is also important. It is also worth remembering that it is impossible to go to a bath or sauna, so as not to dilate the blood vessels and not to provoke further transmission of infection by the hematogenous route.

The appearance of barley on the eye raises a logical question - is barley contagious or not? The infection can indeed be transmitted. However, in order to know whether barley is contagious in the eye for others at a particular moment, it is important to understand the nature of its appearance - the disease occurs in a particular person due to infection. While the barley is in the ripening stage, such a patient can be contacted.

As soon as the purulent contents have the opportunity to come out, a mass of pathogenic bacteria also comes out with it. Some of them have already died out ("digested" by T-lymphocytes), but still scientific studies say that pus can cause infection. Particles of bacteria get on the face, on the hands of a sick person, after which they can be transmitted with household items and through personal contact. This is the most common transmission route.

In order to prevent barley, it is not required to observe particularly strict rules - you just need to take good care of your health, wash your hands more often and not touch your face with dirty hands, treat eye diseases and chronic inflammatory pathologies in time.

Increased attention must be paid to the care of contact lenses so that they do not become the cause of infection.

If the disease has passed, but medical intervention is needed, you need to think about strengthening the immune system, hardening the body, because it is not able to cope with the disease itself. With sufficient immune defense of the body, you can not be afraid of complications and re-development of the disease.

Barley in the eye is such a frequent and clearly occurring disease that you rarely meet a person who does not know what barley is. The correct medical scientific name for barley is hordeolum. Barley on the eyelid looks like a ripe grain. Maybe that's why they gave him that name. In fact, this is a purulent inflammation of the hair follicle, which is located along the edge of the eyelid. Not only the bulb itself becomes inflamed, but also the surrounding tissues. The most common cause or causative agent of barley is a bacterial infection, namely Staphylococcus aureus. The reason for the development of barley is not only the presence of infection, but also the weakened defenses of the body, that is, weakening of the immune system. The main symptoms (or signs) of barley on the eye appear on days 2-3, and barley begins on the eyelid with an unpleasant sensation in any part of the eyelid, redness and swelling of the eyelid quickly appear. The swelling is so extensive that the palpebral fissure narrows or closes completely. The conjunctiva also turns red and swells. The pains get worse. After 2-3 days, a purulent focus is formed, located around the eyelash. After a few days, the barley is opened and purulent discharge appears. With a significantly reduced body resistance, barley can appear often, one after another, or several purulent heads appear at once. Barley is accompanied by a deterioration in the general condition: the temperature rises, the parotid lymph nodes swell and become painful, and there may be headaches. Most often, with proper treatment, barley ends favorably. The abscess opens, edema and inflammation gradually disappear, all symptoms of barley disappear gradually, the patient recovers. But you can't take this disease lightly. Like any purulent disease, especially on the face, barley is dangerous with possible and very serious complications if the infection penetrates into the depths of the tissues of the orbit and especially into the cranial cavity. Under no circumstances should you put pressure on the inflamed area and squeeze out pus!

Barley prevention consists of a few simple rules.

Do not touch your eyes with dirty hands

Use only your own toiletries, towel and bed linen

- use disposable napkins and handkerchiefs on the road

Do not give anyone your makeup, change brushes and eyelash brushes more often

- avoid hypothermia of the face, especially do not expose a hot face to the cold wind

- wear a hat in cool weather

Often patients ask: "Is barley contagious in the eye?" I must say that barley on the eyelid is not contagious, but microbes brought in with dirt can bring trouble. With repeated barley, examination by a therapist is necessary. You should find out what exactly is the cause of frequent barley. Be sure to check the blood for sugar content.

Barley is an inflammation that forms on the upper or lower eyelid of the eye. As a rule, the center of its formation is the base of the eyelash bulb. Internal eye inflammation is less common. But many confuse chalazion (growth on the eyelid) with eye barley. Chalazion is an inflammation that forms in the sebaceous gland of the eye. It is also called cold barley.

Eye barley is a rather unpleasant formation, therefore, a person who encounters it has a number of relevant questions: what antibiotics should be taken, which doctor should be consulted. This type of eye disease gets its name from the similarity to barley grain. Scientifically, the eye barley is called "blepharitis".

This unpleasant formation occurs very often, it is characterized as a reddened and painful swelling, in the area of which constant itching is felt. The main cause of ocular barley is an acute purulent infection. In most cases, Staphylococcus aureus is the cause. For many people who have had this disease, virtually every cold ends up in barley. This is due to weakened immunity.

The developmental process of eye barley

The first manifestation of barley is the formation of a slight swelling, itching in the eye does not stop throughout the entire maturation of barley, touching it, as a rule, causes pain. At the same time, noticeable redness occurs in the conjunctival region. Within 2-4 days, the barley gradually matures, forming a purulent nodule. Doctors do not recommend touching the inflammation, and even more so it cannot be squeezed out. The fact is that the infection that is inside the barley can spread throughout the eye.
The place of formation of barley most often becomes the upper eyelid, a little less often - the area of the lower eyelid. Internal inflammation of the eye rarely occurs. In some cases, the disease affects two eyes at once.

Internal inflammation

Such barley is located in inside century. In most cases, this type of eye disease occurs in the upper eyelid area. In this case, inflammation is observed in the meibonite glands. Basically, internal barley does not require a visit to the doctor, gradually dissolving without taking special measures... This formation does not differ in pain. In rare cases, the internal inflammation begins to thicken, gradually acquiring similarities to a nodule known as chalazion or cold barley.

A little about cold barley

The formation of a small nodule (chalazion), unlike other types of barley, is often removed surgically. It is not worth waiting for cold barley to dissolve on its own; noticing it, it is better to immediately consult a doctor. It occurs due to blockage of the sebaceous glands, which is often the result of infection or the result of unripe eye barley. The cause of the inflammation can be determined by a specialist doctor who treats such diseases. Which doctor should you contact - more on that later.

What method treats eye stye at the initial stage of its maturation?

At the first sensations of inflammation in the eyelid, it should be warmed up. There are many ways to accomplish this task, for example, a warm cloth is suitable for this purpose. You can also warm the sore eye with a warm boiled egg. Next, an ointment containing antibiotics is applied to the eyelid. If all these methods do not give the expected result, you should consult a doctor. After examining the resulting inflammation, the doctor will prescribe a course of treatment, which may include antibiotics.

What is important to consider when treating barley?

It is important to know that in no case should you warm your eyes with sensations that resemble twitching. During the treatment of eye inflammation, it is recommended to forget about cosmetics. Often, common barley formations do without going to a doctor who treats such inflammatory processes. But if several purulent nodules have formed on the eyelid of the eye at once, only a qualified doctor should be treated. Almost any specialist doctor treats such diseases with the help of special eye drops, tablets and ointments, which include antibiotics.

When treating the formed nodule, you should eat foods that are rich in vitamins. Particular attention should be paid to B vitamins, it is known that dry brewer's yeast contains a large amount of them. It is recommended to do regular rinsing of the inflamed eye; for this, a decoction of calendula is good.

You cannot touch and squeeze out a ripe nodule. If the barley is at this stage, it is better to apply an ointment containing antibiotics to the inflamed eyelid, or to cauterize it, iodine or alcohol is quite suitable for this. A lotion from a sterile cotton swab dipped in strong warm tea treats eye barley well.

Which doctor should I see if I have eye barley?

As a rule, barley is treated by an ophthalmologist. Often there are cases when a person with a purulent nodule formed on the eye has an allergic reaction to certain medications. It is important to see a doctor here. An ophthalmologist will select a special treatment for eye barley, and also tell you which doctor should conduct an additional examination. In extreme cases, the nodule is removed with surgery. As a preventive measure, the doctor may prescribe the intake of vitamins, this will strengthen the immune system.

In order to decide which ophthalmologist is best to contact, you can take the trouble and find out the reviews, because we are talking about your health. First of all, any qualified doctor will prescribe antibiotics, which include Albucid, Penicillin, or Erythromycin. As you know, an antibiotic heals well any infectious disease, and since the cause of the formation of barley is often precisely the infection, it cannot do without it in this case. Which of them is better to resort to, can only be known to the attending physician.

Erythromycin ointment is placed behind the eyelid of the inflamed eye. This method works well for barley, but the procedure should be done before bed. If you take the right measures on time (even at the first signs of the disease), you may not need to see a doctor. Often, the first symptoms disappear within a day. Levomycetin treats eye inflammation well, this drug can be replaced with Tobrex, Albucid, etc. Which one is worth resorting to, you should consult your doctor.

A visit to the doctor can be dispensed with even if tetracycline ointment is applied at the first symptoms of the disease (burning, itching and pain). Thus, it is possible to suppress the disease even at its first manifestations. Even if the barley does reach maturity, it will have a minimal size. You can replace the tetracycline ointment by using alcohol or antibacterial soap.

How to treat barley in folk ways?

Deciding which folk method is better to resort to should be given the individual characteristics of the organism. The stage of inflammation also plays a significant role here. If you nevertheless decide to go to a doctor for advice, use traditional medicine well complement the prescribed treatment complex. The main thing to remember is that the wrong methods of treatment can lead to an aggravation of the inflammatory process. A visit to the doctor will give you the opportunity to find out at what stage the disease is, and independently applied folk methods will be absolutely safe.

There are various alternative methods of treating barley:

 1. Warm lotions from a decoction of calendula. It is recommended to use them as often as possible.
 2. A purulent nodule can be rubbed with a garlic clove. You should act carefully so as not to get into the mucous membrane.
 3. With a decoction of coriander, you can achieve a good effect. A teaspoon of seeds is brewed in a glass of water. The procedure for flushing the inflamed eye is recommended to be carried out at least 3 times a day.
 4. Aloe leaf can be applied over the purulent nodule.
 5. Very often people warm up their sore eye with warm mashed potatoes wrapped in a piece of gauze.
 6. You can use the raw egg protein method. A tissue napkin soaked in it is applied to the inflamed eye.
 7. Chamomile broth or boric acid will help to prevent the maturation process at the onset of the nodule (having felt itching in the eyelid area). The moistened swab should be applied to the eye where the barley has formed.

In order to quickly get rid of eye barley, the use of modern drugs can be combined with traditional medicine methods. Barley in medicine does not belong to serious diseases, therefore, it is often treated on its own, but this can be significantly delayed.

Eye stye, medical name: Hordeoluma (swelling on the eyelid that causes significant discomfort) can be treated with effective and affordable methods. However, it would be better to take care of yourself and eliminate possible reasons this phenomenon.

Reasons for the appearance

Inflammation occurs due to infection of the eyelash follicle in the root area. There are several factors that can provoke the appearance of an unpleasant cosmetic defect:

 1. Barley in the eye can be caused by hypothermia. At the same time, you should not think that cold is the root cause. Hypothermia is only a provoking factor that triggers the mechanism for the development of a bacterial infection present on the mucous membrane of the eye.
 2. Possible reasons for the appearance of barley are hypovitaminosis and reduced immunity, when the body is unable to effectively resist the viruses attacking it.
 3. Frequent appearance of barley on the eye can be caused by chronic pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract, diabetes, recurrent furunculosis.
 4. The risk of infection of the eyelash follicle increases with blepharitis or demodicosis, which are chronic diseases century.

Causes provoking barley under the eye create a favorable environment for the active reproduction of staphylococcus. The bacterium that triggers a staphylococcal infection, subject to the normal functioning of the body, is constantly present on the skin and nasal mucosa.

As a result of the creation of suitable conditions for reproduction, the infection quickly spreads to the eye through invisible holes in the edge of the eyelid or skin. A hematogenous route of infection is also possible, when bacteria are transferred by blood.

Symptoms

In any case, barley on the eye is not asymptomatic, as evidenced by numerous photos on the Internet. The disease can be visually identified by the following signs:

 • the presence of limited swelling on the lower or upper eyelid;
 • determination on palpation of a dense and at the same time elastic formation, painful to the touch;
 • hyperemia (swelling) of the skin over the swollen area, its redness;
 • swelling and redness of the conjunctiva. Collectively, such signs are called chemosis.

If the barley on the eye proceeds in an acute severe form, symptoms may additionally be observed: elevated temperature, headache, lymphadenitis, which indicate intoxication of the body as a whole.

As the barley matures, the seal becomes yellowish and a white dot appears on its surface.

Kinds

Depending on the place of appearance of the inflamed swelling, barley is divided into internal and external. In the first case, the development of an abscess occurs in the lower or upper eyelid inside the eye and becomes the result of infection in the meibomian glands (each eyelid contains from 50 to 70 glands, the purpose of which is to maintain the moisture of the eyes, prevent evaporation of tears from the surface of the eyeball). The formation of barley on the eye can provoke blockage of the glands and the subsequent development of chalazion - a tumor-like formation inside the sebaceous gland.

When external barley appears on the eye, it tears the edge of the eyelid, so inflammation affects the outside of the eye as a result of infection in the surrounding tissues. As a rule, such barley causes smaller pain in comparison with an internal abscess.

After the onset of swelling, it takes from 2 to 4 days before the formation of the directly suppuration site, which, in the normal course of the disease, opens up quite quickly on its own, releasing contents consisting of dead tissue and pus. Sometimes resorption of the seal occurs without suppuration, and the defect disappears without causing significant discomfort. In such a situation, treatment is minimized and ends as soon as possible. Therefore, it is important to quickly diagnose barley at the initial stage, immediately applying drops and other therapy.

Effective treatment

The problem of how to remove barley from the eye is solved through complex therapy, which involves the use of medications, folk remedies and physiotherapy (often carried out not at home, but in a doctor's office). It is especially important to do the procedures described below in the absence of improvements after a couple of days of the independent course of the disease, as serious complications may arise.

Treatment of the disease is carried out in a specific sequence.

 1. An effective remedy for barley on the eye until the abscess ripens is ethyl alcohol, calendula tincture, iodine or brilliant green solutions. When treating inflammation in the lower or upper eyelid with such drugs, it is important to do cauterization as carefully as possible so as not to damage the mucous membrane of the eye.
 2. Immediately after the diagnosis of barley on the eye, at home, antibacterial treatment is started using suitable drops in the form of Levomycetin, Floxal, Tsipromed and others (you need to choose drops based on age).
 3. A remedy for barley on the eye such as UHF helps to speed up the ripening of the boil and facilitate the course of the abscess. True, the procedure can be done only in the absence of temperature.
 4. If the disease constantly recurs, drugs are additionally prescribed to help quickly activate the body's defenses (vitamins, immunostimulants). Sometimes autohemotherapy is required (blood taken from a vein is injected intramuscularly). With the appropriate skills, infusions can be made at home.

If barley is accompanied by symptoms of intoxication, drops and other drugs are supplemented with antipyretic and antihistamines.

Surgical method

Such treatment is carried out if the barley is of impressive size or there is no improvement over a long period of time. During the operation, the doctor has to puncture the abscess in a hospital setting with a needle or make an incision in order to drain and exit the infection (see photo below).

It is categorically not recommended to do such actions on your own, since improper removal of pus at home can cause inflammation of the orbit or even the development of meningitis.

When treatment can hurt

In the presence of barley on the eye, it is impossible to carry out treatment using warming, since as a result the infection can spread to nearby tissues. Therefore, it is forbidden to make any warming compresses at home. Also, the use of cosmetics and the wearing of contact lenses are contraindicated due to the risk of additional injury to the mucous membrane and the abscess itself.

Quick help at home

You can find a way to cure barley in the eye by leafing through the recipes of traditional medicine. At home, it is important to carry out hygienic cleansing, constantly removing dry crusts and purulent discharge from the surface of the eyelid. It is possible to effectively wash the eyelids using baby shampoo diluted with water (a cotton pad is moistened with soap). After the procedure, the eyes should be rinsed with boiled water.

A good effect is also given by lotions, for which calendula tincture or aloe juice is used at home, after diluting such funds with boiled water. If you are looking for how to cure barley on the eye at home, do not forget about grandmother's advice, recommending washing the inflamed eye with strong black tea or herbal infusions based on chamomile, birch buds, bird cherry flowers.

Features of the treatment of children

Barley on a child's eye is a particularly unpleasant phenomenon, as children often rub the sore eye, exacerbating the situation. Only a specialist should select a treatment regimen (drops and ointments), correlating the benefits and harms of the drugs used for the child's body.

Of the medicines at home, you can use eye drops - Oftalmeron (shown even to infants), Tobrex (especially effective for frequent relapses of the disease, since instillation does not cause painful sensations). Albucid or Levomycetin, which is familiar to many adults, is also used if the child calmly reacts to the tingling of the eyeball caused by drops. Also, a good result is provided by ointments - Floxal, Tobrex - in combination with eye drops.

Lotions that need to be done using decoctions of a series, chamomile, plantain, help to quickly cure barley in a child's eye at home. In the summer, sunbathing is most effective.

Professional ointments

It is recommended to carry out medical treatment of barley on the eye at home using eye drops and ointments, the active ingredient of which is an antibiotic. It is advisable to first obtain a prescription from a doctor who will correctly select the dosage and duration of therapy, based on the severity of the abscess. In addition to the Floxal and Tobrex used for the treatment of children (both drops and ointments are on sale), drugs based on tetracycline, erythromycin, hydrocortisone are widely used, which accelerate the ripening process of barley.

In order for the question of how to get rid of barley on the eye at home to be resolved effectively without the risk of relapse, it is important to correctly apply such funds, focusing on the recommendations below.

Tetracycline

For barley on the upper or lower eyelid, tetracycline ointment is considered the most effective. As a rule, its use at home does not cause side effects, but only if the existing contraindications and recommendations regarding dosage are taken into account.

If there is an increased sensitivity to the main active ingredient, the presence of a fungal infection, kidney disease or an abnormality in the number of leukocytes in the blood, treatment with tetracycline can provoke intestinal upset, vomiting, nausea, allergic skin reactions and even dangerous Quincke's edema. When one of the listed symptoms is observed, the tetracycline ointment is replaced with another antibacterial drug.

Another contraindication to the use of tetracycline ointment for the treatment of barley is the child's age under 5 years old.

Erythromycin

Erythromycin ointment is also an effective ophthalmic drug and a non-toxic antibacterial agent. Due to the presence of excipients, among which there is also a special medical petroleum jelly, such an ointment provides a softer treatment in comparison with the first option, therefore it is prescribed for children of any age and expectant mothers for use at home, subject to the appropriate doctor's permission.

Among the existing contraindications are a negative reaction to the main active ingredient, severe pathology of the kidneys or liver, the presence of jaundice and the period breastfeeding... In addition, you need to carefully read the instructions before use, since an overdose is fraught with a strong allergic reaction and local skin irritation.

Hydrocortisone

Hydrocortisone ointment is an effective anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic agent. After application, almost immediately, there is a decrease in the manifestation of inflammation, swelling and redness of the eyelid.

It is not recommended to carry out treatment using hydrocortisone ointment if barley has developed against the background of a viral, fungal infection, the integrity of the corneal epithelium is broken, glaucoma or eye tuberculosis is diagnosed. Also, the ointment is not prescribed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with childhood under the age of 18.

It is advisable to use any ointment from barley no longer than ten days. The same duration is typical for the treatment with eye drops. Usually, drops are first instilled into the eye socket, maintained for a 10-15 minute interval and ointment is placed (the procedure is carried out at least 2 times per day). The photo below shows how to properly apply the eye ointment.

In order for the treatment of barley on the eye to be carried out quickly and efficiently, an ophthalmologist must control the process. Incorrectly selected drops can delay recovery, provoking complications that negatively affect not only vision, but also the health of the body as a whole. We are talking about an abscess of the orbit, phlegmon, keratitis and conjunctivitis, which is less dangerous to health. In order to avoid such consequences, you need to pay attention to the first negative sensations, avoiding complications. And, of course, it is necessary to eliminate the causes of barley, otherwise relapses of the disease are not excluded.
